This is a great blog. I have a lot of similar experiences at Springboard, and consider it part of my job to discourage people from starting nonprofits. The phrase I like for artists is "there has to be a mission outside of the creation of your own work" to merit starting a nonprofit. If you are just trying to get your own work produced (or in other fields, trying to create a job for yourself) then there are easier and better ways to do that. I have become a huge believer in fiscal sponsorship as a way for potential organizations to test the waters - to get some programming under their belts, experience the competitive grant process and understand the workload of running an organization. Does fiscal sponsorship work as well for non-arts organizations?
